What your family can see
The owner and every admin see the same things.
In a Haven Family, the owner and any admins can see a short summary about each member. You can see exactly what they see about you: sign in at account.starthaven.com and look for What your family can see about you. It names everyone who can see it. The Haven extension shows the same names: open it from your browser's toolbar.
- Your name and email address, and any other email addresses linked to you in the family.
- Your access (member or admin), the groups you are in, and how you joined.
- Your Haven status: Active, Needs attention, Something happened, or Not set up, with a short reason. For example, "One of their browsers is out of date", "Haven hasn't heard from their browser in over a week", or "Haven flagged at least one risky page visit in the past week".
- Whether Haven is running on your browser.
Depending on how the family is set up, the owner may also get a weekly email listing each person's status, including yours. If Haven flags something for someone in the family, the owner and admins can be told once a day without saying who, and you get an email about it too. Your own page says which of these apply to you.
What they cannot see
Haven does not send them your activity.
- Which sites you visit, including which page was flagged.
- What you download, including which file Haven paused.
- What is in your email.
- How many times Haven flagged something, or exactly when.
They can change the family's settings, such as which sites are Protected, and those settings apply on your browser while you are in the family. They can also remove you from the family.
Leaving a family
You can leave at any time, in one step. Nobody has to approve it.
-
Sign in at account.starthaven.com and open Settings.
-
Under Your family, choose Leave family, then confirm.
What happens straight away:
- The family stops seeing your Haven status, and its settings stop applying to your browser.
- You no longer appear in the family's member list.
- If you use Haven, it keeps protecting your browser.
- To rejoin, you would need a new invitation.
Leaving is not silent. The family's owner gets an email saying you left, with your name and email address. Admins are not emailed, but anyone who looks at the family's member list will see you are no longer in it. Deleting your Haven account also takes you out of the family, and the owner gets the same email.
The family's owner cannot leave this way. Ownership has to move to another adult first, which Haven support does: email support@starthaven.com.
Asking Haven support to remove you
If you cannot sign in, or would rather not do it yourself.
Email support@starthaven.com from the email address you use with Haven, or use the contact form, and say which family you want to be taken out of. Haven support can remove you from it.
When Haven support removes someone, the family's owner gets an email saying Haven support removed them, with their name and email address. If that is a concern for you, say so when you write.
If you feel unsafe
Free, confidential help in the US.
- National Domestic Violence Hotline. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788, or chat with an advocate from thehotline.org.
- Coalition Against Stalkerware. If you think someone has put software on your phone or computer to watch you, their guide for survivors covers spotting it, removing it and preventing it, and their list of resources points to organizations that can help.
- If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
Haven cannot tell whether someone has installed monitoring software on your device, and it does not remove it.
Your device and browser
Things worth knowing if someone else may use your device.
- Haven does not tell your family which pages you visit, including this one. Your browser keeps its own history, though, and anyone who uses your device may be able to see it.
- Anyone who can use your browser while you are signed in to Haven can open your Haven account as you.
- The Haven extension shows who in your family can see your status every time you open it, so that line can be seen by anyone looking at your screen.
